Now is it just me or would it be better if we didn't pollute in the first place? I figure if those offsets bring some sheckles into the state, they can't be all bad.

Carbon Offsets and Renewable Energy Credits

To explain this community topic in a nutshell: There's a new marketplace out there, where people can buy and sell the right to pollute the atmosphere (trade).  The government can limit these rights to so many tons of carbon per year (cap).  This type of system is called "Cap and Trade".  Polluters (even car drivers) can buy renewable energy credits, which pay people to generate clean energy, to offset their carbon production. According to the Environmental and Energy Technology Council of Maine, ("E2Tech"), "Clean Tech is defined by a diverse range of products, services, and processes that harness renewable materials and energy sources, promote the sustainable use of natural resources, and reduce or eliminate emissions and wastes.

On November 15, 2011, The Environmental and Energy Technology Council (E2Tech) and its partners held an event heralded as the launch of Maine's Clean Tech Corridor. While it was safe to witness this launch from a mere distance of 5 feet or so, the potential economic power of the Clean Tech Corridor may be formidable, indeed.

According to a report issued on November 15, 2001 by the Analysis Group in Boston, MA, the 10-state Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) added $1.6 billion in value to the regional economy over the past three years. $92 million of this went to Maine, creating at least 918 jobs.

On October 27, 2011, a coalition of organizations, businesses and individuals announced a new citizens initiative to increase clean energy in Maine in order to increase energy independence, create jobs, control energy costs and cut pollution. The coalition has established a new group, Maine Citizens for Clean Energy, which is beginning to gather signatures for the November 2012 ballot.

Now, most of us wouldn't dream of leaving Maine in August. We'd all dread having to travel to Cincinnati to attend these concurrent workshops, but if you are bidding on government contracts for construction or power purchase agreements, you may be glad you did.

The carbon trading market is a good way to get those who are doing harm to our planet's atmosphere and climate to pay those who want to ameliorate the damage by taking positive actions.  Once we grasp the concept, it is as viable a market as any.
