Now is it just me or would it be better if we didn't pollute in the first place? I figure if those offsets bring some sheckles into the state, they can't be all bad.

Carbon Offsets and Renewable Energy Credits

To explain this community topic in a nutshell: There's a new marketplace out there, where people can buy and sell the right to pollute the atmosphere (trade).  The government can limit these rights to so many tons of carbon per year (cap).  This type of system is called "Cap and Trade".  Polluters (even car drivers) can buy renewable energy credits, which pay people to generate clean energy, to offset their carbon production. If you have been wondering how you can either purchase renewable energy credits (REC's) or other types of carbon offsets, there is a webinar coming up that may answer some of your questions, and make you wish you had never asked some of the others. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) will present a webinar entitled, "Renewable Power Purchases and Renewable Energy Certificates" on Thursday, June 23, from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. EDT.

On June 9. 2011, the Portland Press Herald ran the following op-ed by Suzanne Watson, entitled, "State's Renewable Energy Policies Shouldn't Change: An official defense of Gov. LePage's bill on electricity costs fails to mention some facts". We reprint it here with the author's permission.

For 15 years, Renewable Energy Markets (REM) has defined and expanded marketplace opportunities for clean power. Bridging the interests of renewable energy generators, marketers, and utilities with those of purchasers, policymakers, and the communities that benefit from clean energy, REM is the nation's premier forum for the energy community to gather, learn from each other, and recognize best practices for promoting renewable energy.

Maybe you have heard the news stories about how some residents of rural New York State and Pennsylvania can ignite a stream of water flowing from their kitchen tap by holding a match or lighter next to it. They had clean drinking water from deep aquifers until the mining companies came to their county and began using hydraulic fractionation or "fracking" to extract shale gas.

Welcome to Maine’s conversation about carbon offsets and renewable energy credits.  A carbon offset is someone’s promise to produce some energy in a way that does not add carbon to our atmosphere, so as to offset the carbon that someone else does add to the atmosphere.  So for example, if I know I am going to drive a V8 gas hog of a car from Maine to Florida for my vacation, I can buy some offset credits to make sure that someone else will generate some carbon-free electricity to offset my transgression, and I’ll feel a little better about it.
