The Maine Energy Education Program (MEEP) and Maine Huts and Trails are excited to announce a partnership in conservation through education.

Maine Huts and Trails is a non-profit organization offering an ecotourism destination in the Western Maine Mountains. Their off-the-grid backcountry huts, accessible to people of all ages and abilities, provide opportunities for experiential education. Currently, Maine Huts and Trails has three off-the-grid backcountry huts accessible by snowshoeing or cross country skiing in the winter, or by hiking or biking in the spring, summer, and fall. At the huts, students will have the opportunity to learn about green building design and see solar panels, hydro-generators, and high-efficiency wood boilers at work.

In addition, the Maine Energy Education Program will offer lessons at the huts in energy, electricity and climate change. During these lessons, students will have an opportunity to design wind turbine blades, create a battery out of an apple or put together a solar powered fan. Together MEEP and Maine Huts and Trails can provide Maine students with experiential energy education and memorable outdoor experiences.
