A Grant That Supports Community and Farm Energy Projects in Maine

In 2009, the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Rural Energy in America Program (REAP) funded Efficiency Maine and Unity College's collaborative initiative to update Maine's wind maps. A site in Dexter and another in Turner have been selected for anemometers. The last site has yet to be determined. Maine Rural Partners assessed which Maine sites were appropriate for anemometer installation.

This ongoing initiative is intended to support community and farm energy projects for Maine. A state-wide survey was used to determine the sites for one- year anemometer installations (a wind speed measurement device). This anemometer is to be mounted on a tower measuring at least 100 feet. As of yet it doesn't have specialized rock anchors for the anemometer guy-wires (a tensioned cable designed to add stability to structures). A third site will be implemented this year.
