The mission of Greater Portland Landmarks is to preserve and revitalize the architectural fabric, history, and character of greater Portland – renewing our neighborhoods, spurring economic development and keeping Portland one of the most livable cities in America.
Portland is a great seaport city and its architecture reflects its rich history, but its historic architecture has often been threatened. Landmarks was founded in 1964 in response to the Urban Renewal movement and the demolition of Portland’s historic Union Station (1888).
Through many hard-fought battles Landmarks has transformed the face of Portland and surrounding communities by saving historic properties and creating a new respect for the importance of the built environment to a community’s quality of life.
To date, Landmarks has championed Portland’s first historic preservation ordinance, protecting over 1,600 buildings in 8 historic districts, 5 historic Landscapes, and 74 landmarks structures.
Greater Portland Landmarks also operates the Portland Observatory Museum, the nation’s only remaining historic maritime signal tower, and serves as the steward of this spectacular landmark that is owned by the city of Portland.
Landmarks works tirelessly to increase the public’s connection to greater Portland’s remarkable historic built environment and to ensure this legacy for future generations. For more information, please see our website.
We are dedicated to the creation of energy efficient structures. We design and construct new buildings that can be heated for a fraction of the normal cost. We also dramatically improve the energy efficiency, health and comfort of existing buildings. The great thing is that a smart building upgrade quickly pays for itself, which makes our projects affordable - no matter what your budget.
