The Maine Public Utilities Commission has given approval to a pilot project in Boothbay, spearheaded by GridSolar of Portland. The smart grid project will use energy efficiency, renewable and non-renewable generation and demand response (which encourages users to cut back on their usage during peak hours) in an effort to meet the region's electricity needs without an $18 million transmission line upgrade.
Other partners in the project include Maine's Public Advocate, Conservation Law Foundation, Environment Northeast and the Efficiency Maine Trust.
